Across the UAE and wider Middle East, back to school shopping brings families into stores at the same time, often with the same goal: get everything sorted quickly. Parents are moving through busy retail spaces, checking sizes, comparing options and trying to make decisions while keeping children patient. The visit can quickly become less about shopping well and more about getting it done.
For retailers, that pressure matters. A restless child can shorten the visit. A rushed parent may leave decisions for later. A busy season with strong footfall can lose value if the experience does not support the family using it. This is where play becomes part of the retail strategy. A simple, safe and well placed kids area gives children something to do nearby, while parents have the space to shop properly, make better decisions and stay longer without the visit feeling forced.
a corner near fitting rooms, or a larger footprint where floor space allows.
low-maintenance use that doesn't require a dedicated staff member watching the space.
placement close to uniform or footwear sections, where waits tend to run longest.
For a store during back-to-school season, that means giving parents somewhere to point a child while they finish trying on shoes or comparing sizes, without adding to the floor team's workload. It also gives families a reason to return once the season ends.
What retailers tend to ask about upkeep.
A retail play area is used differently from a dedicated leisure space. Children move in and out more quickly, parents may be browsing nearby and shoppers are moving around the area throughout the day.
That changes what matters. Parents need clear sightlines so they can see their child while shopping. Surfaces need to handle regular use and cleaning. The layout needs to be simple enough for children to understand without staff having to manage every interaction.
The space still needs to look good and feel engaging, but in retail, that is not enough. It also has to be easy for staff to manage, easy for parents to trust and practical for the store’s daily routine.
